Four score and seven years ago. What comes to mind when you hear that phrase? Well, if you thought of Lincoln and his famous Gettysburg Address, than you know your speeches – and maybe even a little bit of American history. But even if you know that Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address after the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War, how much do you actually know about the town itself and the battle that made it famous? Well, look no further! Here are 5 fun facts about Gettysburg:

  1. Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address was less than 275 words in length and only lasted between 2 1/2 – 3 minutes
  2. The Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War lasted for roughly 3 days, and the 2nd day of fighting was the bloodiest
  3. Roughly 50,000 people were killed or wounded during the battle
  4. George Mead, the Commanding General of the Union Army, had just been appointed to the position 3 days before the fighting took place in the small American town
  5. It remains as one of America’s most haunted cities due to its infamous battle
